Superb pair of C19th carved stone grotesque lion faces. These have come from a private collection and originally were part of a set of 28 that were built into the walls of Castle Carr which was a Victorian hunting lodge built high upon the Calderdale moors between Luddenden and Haworth. The castle was demolished and auctioned off in 1964 although the gardens and fountains still exist. At some point in the past these have been cut down from the original blocks to a size that makes them ideal for mounting or hanging for display purposes but could easily be built into a wall. All were likely carved by the same mason but each one is very slightly different and therefore unique.
A rare chance to own a fine piece of history.
Priced as a pair but will split.
