Antique carved stone head, Celtic / Medieval
Price £495
Item Ref: APG 10223
Description
Really unusual find that I think could be quite an early piece.
Quite a rough piece of gritstone, possibly from Yorkshire or Derbyshire that has quite a crudely carved grotesque style face. If a block it would be approx 12” x 12” x 12”. Carved heads have had many meanings over the course of history from purely decorative to religious, to warn off evil spirits or mark the place of an offering. From Celtic through to medieval times they could be found up and down the length of Yorkshire and Derbyshire marking out significant spots, for example the place of a water source. Price £495.00
